A root canal is a treatment required for a tooth that cannot be simply filled as the tooth has become badly decayed or the pulp becomes infected.
The pulp consists of specialised dental cells, blood vessels, tissue fibres and some nerve fibres located in the hollow space in the central part of the tooth. If this area becomes infected the tooth would then require root canal treatment, where each nerve (pulp) of the tooth is removed, this involves dental files that clean out the infected area and a filling material is then placed.
Root canal treatment usually requires three appointments and has a success rate of about 80%. Once treatment has been completed the treated tooth should last a very long time, that is if you maintain good oral hygiene and generally look after your teeth.
A dentist is always the best option to determine whether you require a root canal treatment. Some symptoms or signs can include a large cavity, which extends to the nerve, severe sensitivity or pain in the tooth and area, a cracked tooth, or the result of a traumatic injury.
