At Wisdom Dental and Denture Clinic we provide all aspects of general dental care, including fillings, root canal treatment and bruxism assessment (TMJ and occlusal splint therapy). Both Dr Chris and Dr Alex offer all dental services ranging from simple fissure sealants and cleans all the way to complex full mouth rehabilitation.
Dental fillings are where a tooth is either chipped, decayed or discoloured and requires a repair.
If a tooth that requires a filling is left untreated it is more prone to further damage, so it is highly recommended to have it checked. At our clinic we use tooth coloured filling materials to repair a tooth so that it blends in with the shade of your natural tooth and surrounding teeth.
Depending on the size of the decay or broken tooth will determine the length of your appointment. Most fillings can take up to 30 mins per filling where the dentist will clean the infected area by removing any decay in the tooth, the tooth is then prepped and restored.
If you are ever unsure whether you may need a filling it is always best to see your dentist to have the tooth professionally checked.
What is a fissure sealant?
A fissure sealant is done using a tooth coloured material and is a quick procedure done by our dentist.
It is recommended that for some patients (usually patients with deep fissures) to get a fissure sealant at an early stage to prevent decay. At 6 years of age we get our first set of molar teeth, therefore from this age you can get this preventative treatment.
A fissure sealant will usually fall off after about 6 months, as it is only a thin layer that will usually start to wear down after time. Therefore, it is a good idea to visit the dentist every 6 months for your routine check up, as the dentist can check the condition of the sealant. Even if a sealant only last 6 months or even years, if it comes out it can still be re applied.
Root Canal Treatment – What to expect
The pulp consists of specialised dental cells, blood vessels, tissue fibres and some nerve fibres located in the hollow space in the central part of the tooth. If this area becomes infected the tooth would then require root canal treatment, where each nerve (pulp) of the tooth is removed, this involves dental files that clean out the infected area and a filling material is then placed.
Root canal treatment usually requires three appointments and has a success rate of about 80%. Once treatment has been completed the treated tooth should last a very long time, that is if you maintain good oral hygiene and generally look after your teeth.
It is important to see a dentist if you feel you may be clenching or grinding as if this is left untreated your natural teeth can be worn down to root stumps. Once diagnosed there are dental appliances called ‘splints’ that can assist patients and prevent damage from happening to their natural teeth. A splint is a clear retainer that is worn over the teeth at night for patient to prevent grinding their natural teeth.
At Wisdom Dental & Denture Clinic, we offer digital milled splints that are made on site. These splints are digitally designed which means the fit is 100% as there is no human error. Our splints not only fit perfectly over the teeth, but they also are made with a strong material to avoid the patient from grinding it down or breaking it.
